Wabash Valley Classic: 4A #4 TH South defeats S. Vermillion

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

TERRE HAUTE – Throughout the first half of Class 4A No. 4 Terre Haute South’s Dec. 26 opening game in the annual Wabash Valley Classic, Braves’ coach Mike Saylor could be heard chastising his players for running their sets for the wrong shooters.

It was a frustrating start for host South, which reached intermission with just a 10-point cushion (28-18) over a vastly outmanned South Vermillion squad. But Saylor must have passed out ID tags at halftime, the one saying “right shooter” clearly being handed to John Michael Jarvis.

The sharp-shooting junior put on a record-setting display from behind the 3-point arc in the second half, and the Braves (7-0) overwhelmed the Wildcats to the tune of 69-31. Jarvis ended the game with nine 3-pointers – six coming in the second half – and finished with 34 points.

While most of the attention from this contest will be focused on Jarvis’ incredible shooting, the real key was Terre Haute South’s defensive pressure.

South Vermillion (0-5) attempted to slow the pace by playing a compact 2-3 zone the entire game. South countered with a variety of pressure defenses, both half- and full-court, in an effort to speed up the Wildcats.

The constant defensive intensity succeeded in forcing the Wildcats into one quick shot after another. Most of the night South Vermillion players were shooting as much in an effort to simply get rid of the ball as they were in an attempt to score.

The result was way too many scoring opportunities for the Braves, and they capitalized on a high percentage of them in the final two quarters.

Nor should the play of Terre Haute South point guard Jake Odum go unmentioned. He ended the game with 12 assists, many of those perfectly placed darts to the deadly Jarvis.

Coach Saylor made it clear following the game that he believes Odum is the best-kept secret in Indiana basketball.

“The young man is under-appreciated and has been under-recruited,” said the fifth-year Braves coach. “If there is a better point guard in Indiana, I would like to know who it is.”

Terre Haute South advances to play a solid Marshall (IL) team that defeated Owen Valley, 66-52, Friday. If the brackets play out to form, the tourney should boast a tremendous Monday evening semifinal between the Braves and 1A #1 Rockville.

BB: TH South And North Central Remain Undefeated With Weekend Victories

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

Terre Haute South and North Central remained perfect, Ben
Davis suffered some heartbreak, and Carmel put a small school power back in
their place. That and much more came to pass on the hardwood for MIC teams this
past weekend.

Terre Haute South moved to 5-0 Friday night with a
relatively easy 56-40 verdict over Vigo County rival West Vigo. Meanwhile, the
conference’s other unbeaten, North Central, waited until Saturday to take the
court and came away with a hard fought 61-57 verdict over Hamilton
Southeastern. Terone Johnson led the Panthers in what was by far the closest
battle they have seen with 22 points. North Central trailed at the half, and
was still down by one at the end of three periods before pulling out the win.
The Panthers are now 6-0 on the campaign.

Carmel had a solid weekend, picking up two victories. The Greyhounds
spanked Fishers Friday night, 72-55. On Saturday, they   brought the high flying Lafayette Central
Catholic Knights back to earth, downing the 1A power 74-56. That came less than
24 hours after LCC upset 4A #2 Cathedral. Carmel used a big third quarter to
sew up the verdict. They outscored LCC in that Period by a 20-10 margin. Morgan
Newton continued to show his skills go past the football field. He led Carmel
with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lawrence North picked up a victory in their
only contest of the weekend. The Wildcats downed Chicago Simeon 63=61.

For the rest of the league, the weekend was not nearly as
successful. Warren Central split a pair of tough games, downing Ben Davis on
Friday 70-57, but falling to high powered Franklin Central Saturday night,
52-46.  Ben Davis dropped a second game,
losing to Brownsburg in a close affair Saturday evening, 52-49. The Giants, who
are now 0-5, have lost one game by one point, one by three, and two by six. That
is some serious heartbreak.

Terre Haute North dropped a pair of decisions as well. The
Patriots fell to Mooresville 71-59 Friday night and then lost a thriller to Evansville’s
Harrison 66-65 the next night.  Center
Grove suffered a little bit of a southside ego blow Friday evening when the
Trojans fell to Whiteland 62-55. Their road to redemption won’t be an easy one.
Center Grove faces 4A #1 Bloomington South Tuesday night.

BB: North Central Continues To Romp On The Hardwood

Mike Mcgraw

Hoosier Authority

The Terre Haute
schools continued to fare well in MIC play this past weekend. Terre Haute South
picked up their second conference victory Friday night with a 73-64 verdict
over Center grove. City rival North won their league opener by dumping Ben Davis
59-50. Those games highlighted what was a very strong weekend for the MIC.

The other conference match-up Friday night was a showdown of
sorts. Indianapolis North Central continued their early season romp by downing
neighborhood rival Carmel
75-67. It was only the beginning of a very good weekend for the Panthers.

Saturday, the Panthers made their case for a much higher
state ranking when they demolished 4A #3 Lafayette Jeff in the Circle City
Classic at Southport, 90-70. Freshman
sensation D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera led the Panthers with 22 points. However, it
was their defensive effort on the high scoring Bronchos that carried the day.
In that same event, Lawrence North took care of 2A power Fort Wayne Luers
69-57. Dominique Ferguson led the way for the Wildcats with 19 points.

Elsewhere, Terre Haute North felt the wrath of the #1 rated
Bloomington South Panthers. The Patriots fell 86-55. Martinsville also sprang a bit of an upset by
downing center grove 66-59. Warren
Central’s only contest of the week was on Thursday when the Warriors disposed
of Fishers 58-51.

BB: Wrap-up Of Weekend MIC Roundball Action

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

Things are
heating up on the hardwood and it was an interesting weekend for teams in the
MIC. The play was headlined by Terre Haute South’s 50-44 upset of Lawrence
North on Friday night. Anthony McGill led the Braves with 15 points. However,
it didn’t take long for Jack Keefer’s bunch to bounce back. LN demolished
Marion 70-58 in a game that was not as close as the final score indicates.
Meanwhile, Terre Haute South made it a double dip weekend by downing
Mooresville Saturday night 67-57.

The most
impressive team in the league continues to be North Central. The Panthers went
over the century mark in a 107-89 rout of Indianapolis Broad Ripple Friday
night. They then pinned an 80-55 smackdown on Lawrence Central. Justin Reid led
the Panthers with 20 points and eight rebounds. North Central is 3-0 on the
year.

Center Grove
split a pair of games. The Trojans downed Southport 69-55 Friday evening, but
fell to another Conference Indiana foe, Bloomington North, 59-58 in two
overtimes Saturday. J.T. Barton led Center Grove in the losing effort with 15
points. CG is now 2-1 on the season.

Carmel also
split a pair of games and ended the weekend at 2-1 on the year. The Greyhounds
lost a 42-40 heartbreaker to Hamilton County rival Noblesville on Friday.
Saturday, they responded by blitzing Indianapolis Tech 93-51. Morgan Newton
transferred his skills to the basketball court and led Carmel with 15 points. Terre
Haute North lost to Northview on Friday night 57-53, but rebounded with a
comfortable 48-31 triumph over Vincennes Lincoln Saturday.

It was a
tough weekend for Ben Davis. The Giants lost their season opener to Pike Friday
night 89-83 and then fell in a cliff hanger to Indianapolis Arlington 61-60.
Warren Central also lost in a barnburner. They fell to Indianapolis Cathedral
51-50 Friday night. That was the only contest for the Warriors over the
weekend.

Conference
action will really hear up Friday evening this week. Ben Davis will visit Terre
Haute North, Center Grove will be at Terre Haute South, and Carmel will renew
acquaintances with North Central on the Panthers home court.

BB: Terre Haute South Pulls Off “Small” Win Over Top Ranked Lawrence North

There is a new strategy for competing against the size and
talent of Lawrence
north. It is called small ball and if Friday night is any indication, it may
catch on quickly. That is the plan Coach Mike Saylor used in guiding his Terre
Haute South Braves to a 50-44 upset of the #1 Wildcats.

At various times during the game, Terre haute South employed
five guards against LN. The theory was simple. If you can’t match up with the
Wildcats size, don’t try to do so. South made Lawrence North play their style
and it worked just enough to win.

The Braves canned 11 of 22 attempts from behind the three
point line, and put three players in double figures. They were led by Anthony
McGill who scored 15 points. The game was the conference opener for both
squads.

BB: MIC Teams Remain Undefeated On The Hardwood

The MIC
remained undefeated as a conference in early season basketball action. Three
league teams saw the hardwood Saturday night and all were winners. That is on
top of all four MIC teams who played Wednesday night also being victorious.

Saturday, #1
Lawrence North went to 2-0 on the season, but it wasn’t easy. The Wildcats
survived a spirited effort from Brebeuf to triumph 40-36. Terre Haute South was
impressive in a 74-49 thrashing of Evansville Reitz. Warren Central capped the
perfect evening with a 73-66 victory over East Chicago Central.

Things
really hear up Friday night when all eight conference teams take the court. The
headliner is unquestionably the opening conference game of the year. LN will
travel to Terre Haute to face the South Braves. The other marquis match-up is
Indianapolis Cathedral visiting Warren Central. The annual west side war
between Ben Davis and Pike is also on tap.
