VB: MIC sectional wrap up

Staff Report

It was a
superlative effort by MIC teams in sectional play over the weekend. The
conference crowned three champions, including one major upset. It also had
several other teams advance to the championship match.

The biggest
upset of the weekend came at Zionsville where the Carmel Greyhounds upset once
beaten Hamilton Southeastern in the final. Even more surprisingly, the Hounds
did it in straight sets, 25-23, 25-17, and 31-29.

Warren
Central spent Saturday finishing what it had started earlier in the week. The
Warriors opened tourney play by ousting defending state champion Cathedral in
the opening round. Warren downed two conference foes in winning the sectional
title. They eliminated North Central in four sets in the semi-final and then
outdueled Lawrence North in straight sets in the final. The scores in that one
were 25-23, 25-15, and 25-19.

Highly
regarded Center Grove took care of business in the Greenwood Sectional. The
Trojans dropped the first set to a talented Perry Meridian team, but won in
four sets 21-25, 25-19, 25-16, and 25-21.

Ben Davis
continued to show great improvement as the Giants advanced to the final at Pike
before falling in three sets to Avon. Meanwhile, at Martinsville they called
Northview the comeback ******. The Knights fell behind Terre Haute South by two
sets in the semi-final and then roared back to win. They then repeated the feat
against Terre Haute North in the championship match.

All of the
sectional winners in the MIC feed into the Perry Meridian Regional. Warren
Central got the best of the draw in this case. The Warriors will face Avon in
the second game Saturday morning. Carmel and Center Grove will face off in the
first match of the day.

VB: Lawrence North and Carmel get best sectional draw of MIC teams

Staff report

Among MIC
teams, Lawrence North and Carmel have to be the happiest with the draw for
sectional play. The Wildcats drew Indianapolis Broad Ripple at the Warren
Central Sectional. They would then play the winner of North central versus
Lawrence central in the second round. That draw avoids both Cathedral and host
Warren central until the final match. That is because the Warriors drew the
defending state champions in the tournament’s opening game.

Carmel
travels to the Zionsville Sectional which is full of Hoosier Crossroads
powerhouses. However, the Greyhounds drew the bye and one of the better
matchups with HCC squads. They will battle with Fishers in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere,
Center Grove drew an improving Franklin Community team in the first round at
greenwood. The good news for the Trojans is that they cannot see their main
competition, Perry Meridian, until the championship match. At Martinsville,
Terre Haute South drew the host Artesians. The Braves downed Martinsville in a
regular season match just a couple of weeks ago. The Terre Haute North Patriots
drew a bye and will face Mooresville in the second round. A rapidly improving
Ben Davis team got a favorable draw at the Pike Sectional. The Giants will open
with Indianapolis Tech and if victorious go directly to the final. They would
most likely see Avon in that match.

BSOC: Four MIC teams claim sectional titles

Staff Report

Four
powerful MIC squads moved on to regional competition by winning sectional
championships. Carmel, Center Grove, Ben Davis, and Terre Haute South all
advanced.

Carmel waded
through the tough Fishers Sectional by downing Westfield 2-1 in the opening
round and then blanking host Fishers 2-0 for the title. Ben Davis had to win
three times to capture its own tournament. The Giants defeated Southport 2-1 in
the first round and then dispatched Indianapolis Washington 5-0 to reach the
finals. Once there, Ben Davis outlasted Perry meridian 1-0 to take the crown.

Center grove
had the easiest time of the MIC winners. The Trojans blasted Greenwood 8-1 in
round one and beat Franklin 3-1 in the final. Meanwhile Terre Haute South
smacked West Vigo 6-1 and then survived MIC rival Terre Haute North 2-1 for the
title.

The
remaining conference teams found the sledding a bit tougher. North Central was
shut out by Brebeuf in the championship game 4-0. Lawrence North fell to
Lawrence Central in the opening round 3-1, and Warren Central fell to Mt.
Vernon 2-1 on penalty kicks in the first round of its sectional.

Carmel now
heads to the North Central Regional where the Greyhounds will square off with
Brebeuf in the first round. Noblesville and Cathedral comprise the other
bracket. Center grove and Ben Davis are both in the regional hosted by the
Trojans. Ben Davis gets no favors, playing powerful Avon in round one. Finally
Terre Haute South will be at the Terre Haute North Regional and vie with #8
Washington in the opening round.
