BB: Carmel comebacks down Terre haute South

Terre haute South learned a valuable lesson Friday night.
When you get a dangerous opponent down, you had better make sure you keep them
there. The Braves didn’t, and that led to a 69-65 loss to the homestanding
Carmel Greyhounds.

South built an 18-11 lead at the end of one quarter and
continued to stretch the advantage through most of the second. The Braves led
30-16 in the final minutes of the first half. Then Carmel went on a run that was the key factor
in the game. The Greyhounds scored the last ten points of the half to close
within 30-26 at intermission. Terre Haute South had controlled the first 16
minutes, but they went to the locker room with very little to show for it.

South point guard Jake Odum did his best to see to it that
the Greyhound comeback didn’t spoil the evening. He scored 24 second half
points on the way o a career high 38 point performance. It looked through most
of the second half as though it would be enough. The Braves rebuilt the lead to
nine with a little over three minutes to play. However, they hadn’t learned
their lesson from the first half.

Carmel
outscored South 18 to 5 in the final minutes to pull out the unlikely victory.
The Greyhound hero, as usual, was Morgan Newton. The Kentucky football bound senior finished the
game with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

The loss was the first for Terre Haute South in MIC play. It
left them with a 3-1 conference slate which is still at the top of the league
standings. After defeating Evansville Central on Saturday night, the Braves are
now 12-2 on the season. Carmel
was idle Saturday night and stands 2-1 in the MIC and 8-4 overall.

W: MIC teams face tough road in state wrestling tourney

The sectional alignments and the team draw for the State
Wrestling tournament have been announced by the IHSAA. For those who are not
familiar with the format, it can be a little confusing. Sectionals will take
place at 32 sites on Saturday, January 31st.  Individual competitors will advance through
regional and semi-state rounds on their way to the State Finals in Indianapolis. The team
champion from each sectional will then compete in one of eight four team
regionals. Regional winners will advance to an eight team state final the week
following the individual finals.

Here is a look at those sectionals involving MIC teams and
the draw that each of those sectionals received for the team tournament.

Zionsville Sectional—Carmel—Winner
will meet winner at Crawfordsville in the North Montgomery
team regional.

Lawrence central
Sectional—Lawrence North, North Central—Winner will face winner at Hamilton Heights
at the North Montgomery team regional

Warren Central Sectional—Warren Central—Winner will face
winner at Shenandoah at the Seymour
team regional

Decatur central
sectional—Ben Davis—Winner will face winner at Avon
in the Greencastle team regional

Mooresville Sectional—Center grove—Winner will face
winner at Northview in the Greencastle team regional

Northview Sectional—Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South
— Winner will face winner at Mooresville in the Greencastle team regional

If you are looking for some analyses of the draw, here is
how it works out. MIC powers Carmel
and Lawrence North have a difficult road. Lawrence North must survive
Indianapolis Cathedral in the sectional. If they pass that test, both they and Carmel will feed into a tough regional where western Indiana powers like
Southmont await. The good news is that if both reach the regional, they drew
away from each other in the first round.

The other thing to keep your eye on is that as many as three
MIC teams could advance to the Greencastle regional. If that happens two of
them are guaranteed to meet in the first round. Warren Central appears to have
caught a little bit of a break in traveling to Seymour for the regional and drawing a
comparatively weak Shenandoah winner. That, of course, assumes the Warriors can
survive a tough field at their own sectional.

GBB: 4A #3 TH South escapes MIC encounter at Warren Central, 55-48

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
INDIANAPOLIS – Class 4A No. 3 Terre Haute South watched a 14-point fourth-quarter lead nearly evaporate Jan. 10 before holding off host Warren Central, 55-48, in a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference clash.
(CLICK ON THE VIDEO PLAYER TO THE LEFT TO HEAR FROM TERRE HAUTE SOUTH COACH DAVE CASSELL AND AT BOTTOM TO HEAR FROM WARREN CENTRAL COACH MICHAEL BROOKS. AND, STAY TUNED FOR VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS!)
The Braves converted 23 of 30 free throws in reaching the double bonus in both halves, allowing them to overcome the Warriors’ valiant comeback attempt after trailing 46-32 with about seven minutes to play. The win pushed South’s perfect record to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIC, while Warren suffered its third straight defeat in falling to 9-5 and 1-2.
Warren Central scored on four straight possessions just into the final period to cut the Braves’ advantage to 47-39. A bunny by 6-foot junior forward Kristien Malone followed by two free throws from junior forward Jordan Barton then sliced the lead to four at 47-43 before the Warriors got it down to three at 51-48 on two free throws by Malone with 2:18 to go.
But Warren’s last five possessions would come up empty as first-year coach Michael Brooks’ girls missed two shots, turned it over three times, and lost a jump ball to South on the possession arrow. The Braves capitalized by hitting 4 of 6 double-bonus free throws during that span to close it out.

GBB: MIC ranks as best league in state

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

January 1st is traditionally seen as the halfway
point of the girls’ basketball season. This is despite the fact that most teams
are well beyond the halfway point of their schedules. Nonetheless, as we head
into the stretch run this year, the MIC currently stands as the top conference
in ‘female hoops.

There are many ways to measure such things, so we thought we
would give you some things to consider. First, the conference haste best
winning percentage of any league in the state. In games though December 27th,
the MIC stood a combined 52-18. That is tops for any league in the state.

The conference boasts three teams in the top ten of the
Sagarin rankings. Ben Davis is second with a rating of 102.50 and Terre haute
South is right behind in third with a rating of 100.19. Carmel also sits in the top ten. The
Greyhounds are ninth on the list. Center Grove is 20th according to
the Sagarin computers. Two more conference schools are in the top 50, and the
lowest ranking of any team in the MIC belongs to Terre Haute North at 145.

Among 4A schools, the MIC places seven of the eight schools
in the top 50. The media and coaches’ polls are giving the league even more
respect. At one time or another, five MIC teams have been cited in the top 20
in Indiana.

Currently, Carmel
leads the MIC race. The Greyhounds stand at 3-0 in league play. However, they
are yet to face either Ben Davis or Terre Haute South. Those two games will
come in a six day span in late January. Carmel
travels to Terre Haute
to face the Braves, and then host the Giants the next week. Terre Haute South
has a rough road to travel. They face Ben Davis the night before they host Carmel. How is that for a
1-2 punch?
