As
inevitably as the sun setting in the west, the MIC track powers are heading
toward a state final where the crown will be decided among themselves. Tuesday
evening’s regional action was simply a repeat of the MIC domination that was
seen at the sectional level.
Top ranked
North Central won the Ben Davis Regional with a 99 point performance. That
certainly was expected. The impressive part of the results is that the MIC made
a clean sweep of the top three spots. #4 Lawrence North finished second with
77.5 points and #9 Ben Davis was third with 74. Among the three schools, they
won seven events during the night.
At
Selbyville, #3 Warren Central marched to another regional crown. The Warriors
posted 83 points in besting the field. Center Grove finished fifth in that
field. Same story, different site at Lafayette. #2 Carmel scored 99 points and
easily outpaced second place Hamilton Southeastern by 20 for the title.
The Terre
Haute schools had a more difficult time in the very tough Evansville Regional.
North finished fifth with 43 points while South was 13th in the
field. Individual results from all the regionals can be seen on the state pages
of Hoosier Authority.
We have come
to expect MIC teams to dominate sectional action and it happened again Thursday
evening. However, #1 ranked Ben Davis put on a show for the ages. The Giants
won ten events at the Southport Sectional on their way to totaling 210 points!
Folks, that is 210 points in a metropolitan Indianapolis sectional. I think the
appropriate word is WOW.
Not to be
outdone, Warren Central earned 206.5 points in claiming the crown at its own
sectional. North Central took top honors at its own sectional. The Panthers
amassed 132 points in slipping past Lawrence Central. Lawrence North was third
at that site. Carmel matched the feat by scoring 150 points in winning its own
sectional. The Greyhounds bested second place Zionsville by 52 points! We know
this is going to start sounding monotonous, but Center Grove also took top
honors. The Trojans won the Franklin Sectional with 158 points.
Many of
those performances are borderline amazing, but the big story of the night came
from the Terre Haute North Sectional. Terre Haute South recorded 174.5 points
in taking the title. The incredible part or the story is that in a 12 team
field, that bested second place Terre Haute North by a grand total of 1.5
points! That’s right. The Patriots scored 173 points and finished second.
In all, the
eight MIC teams accounted for six team titles, one second place finish, and one
third place. Maybe dominating is not a strong enough word.
There were
not a lot of surprises in Tuesday night’s girls sectionals and that means the
powerful MIC teams did exactly what they were supposed to do—advance in
style. The real showdowns will begin at the regional level.
#1 North
Central and #4 Lawrence North finished 1-2 at the Lawrence Central Sectional.
The Panthers prevailed 144.5 to 129.5. Meanwhile Ben Davis, currently #9 in the
polls, easily won its own sectional. The Giants surpassed second place Pike 161
to 148. The three powerhouses will collide in the Ben Davis Regional. Here are
the individual results from the two sectionals.

The MIC
softball powers have to really like their draw in the upcoming sectional
tournaments. Here is a quick look at how lady luck smiled on the conference
squads.
Carmel must
simply be living right. The Greyhounds not only drew into the bye round of the
Fishers Sectional, but also avoided both HCC powers, Noblesville and Hamilton
Southeastern, until the final. This one could not have shaped up better for the
MIC entrant.
At Warren
Central, the host and highly regarded Warriors could not have done much better.
They drew Indianapolis Broad Ripple in the opening round and would then face
the winner of Lawrence Central versus fellow MIC squad North Central in the
semi-final. Cathedral or Lawrence North will wait in the championship tilt.
Warren Central should survive this one.
Center Grove
will have to traverse Perry Township to reach the finals of the Franklin
Sectional. The Trojans will open versus an improved Southport squad and the
winner will see Perry Meridian in the second round. Look for the Trojans to be
regional bound.
Finally, at
Northview, Terre Haute South and city rival North should settle matters between
them in the semi-finals. South opens with Martinsville while North sees
Plainfield. Mooresville will likely wait in the title bout.
Third-ranked Carmel won its third straight Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference girls tennis tournament May 9 at Ben Davis, capturing three of the meet’s five championships and outdueling No. 6 Terre Haute South by five points for the team title.
The Greyhounds got individual crowns at No. 1 singles (Courtney Wild), No. 1 doubles (Megan Renninger and Olivia Trancik), and No. 2 doubles (Sarah Rodefeld and Susie Chen) in tallying 49 team points, five more than the runner-up Braves. Eighth-ranked Center Grove (29) eked past No. 7 Terre Haute North (28) for third place in the eighth-team field that featured four of the state’s eight top-ranked programs.
Amanda Nguyen finished second at No. 2 singles for Carmel, while Elizabeth Trancik took third at No. 3 singles for coach Sharon Rosenburgh. Terre Haute South, meanwhile, won the tourney’s two other titles at No. 2 singles (Taylor Bullock) and No. 3 singles (Maddy Kesler).
The conference crown was just the start of a murderous stretch of schedule that will see the ’Hounds travel to North Central May 11, host ninth-ranked Columbus North May 12, hit the road for a May 13 date at No. 11 Hamilton Southeastern, travel to seventh-ranked Terre Haute North May 15 …
… visit top-ranked Park Tudor May 20 … then host HSE and a talented Noblesville team among five Sectional 5 opponents beginning the next day. Ah, the perils of rescheduled spring sporting events in Hoosierville!

Keaton O’Laughlin
fired a three-hit complete game, the first of his high school career, to lead
Terre Haute North past city rival South 2-0 Thursday evening. O’Laughlin
outdueled South’s A.J. Reed who only allowed four hits and struck out thirteen
Patriots in a sterling effort.
The only
runs in this game came after a two out, two strike infield single on a checked
swing in the Patriot fourth inning. It was followed by two run scoring hits and
that was the difference in the game.
Sometimes
you have to wonder if anybody is really paying attention. Last week, Center
Grove was second in the 4A poll and Carmel was third. Both teams trailed
undefeated Avon. So, Carmel travelled to Avon and beat the Orioles this past
weekend. Nonetheless, the new poll shows the three teams in the exact order
they were before the action.
This week
they are joined on the list by both Terre Haute schools. South is 15th
and North enters the poll at #20. Here is a look at the complete poll in all

Second-ranked North Central (Indianapolis) got four first-place finishes en route to defending its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference girls track & field title May 1 at Ben Davis. The Panthers totaled 118 points to outdistance runner-up No. 3 Carmel (104) and top-ranked Warren Central (99.5) for the crown.
Fifth-ranked Lawrence North (91.5) finished fourth in the eight-team event that featured four of the state’s top five schools and seven of the top 14, with host Ben Davis (89.5) placing fifth and No. 14 Center Grove (85) taking sixth.
Warren Central sophomore Logan Hayes was the meet’s lone double winner, nipping teammate senior Ebony Wright by three-hundredths of a second in the 100-meter dash (:12.49) and coasting to victory in the 200 with a :25.77.

Top-ranked Ben Davis defended its home nicely May 1, bringing home the Giants’ second straight Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Tournament championship with a 12-point win over No. 2 Warren Central in an eight-team field featuring five of the state’s top seven boys track & field schools.
Ben Davis, the defending boys state champion, won seven of 16 events in totaling 132 points. That was enough to topple a talented field that included runner-up Warren Central (120), third-place No. 3 Carmel (95.5), seventh-ranked Center Grove (fourth with 68), and No. 4 North Central (Indianapolis) (65).
The seven wins included an easy double for senior Matthew Terrell in the 100-meter dash (:10.78) and the 200 (:21.91, or a full second better than the field). Terrell also ran the anchor leg of the Giants’ victorious 4×100 meter relay unit (:42.35), and BD proved its all-around superiority by picking up wins in a pair of field events with senior Colin Hester taking the long jump (22-03.00) and classmate Mike Malone the shot put (56-02.50).
“Our athletes competed well on the track,” said Carmel coach Will Ellery. “We struggled a little bit with most of our field events, and that’s an area in which we’ve been strong throughout the year, so overall we’re happy.
“There were several strong efforts, especially in a field as tough as this was.”
Ellery specifically mentioned Logan Rosenberg’s victory in the 1600 followed by a runner-up finish in the 3200, Dan Porter finishing second in both the 800 and the 1600, and Justin Batten scoring in three events (100, 200, and 4×100 relay).
“We’re pleased with our competitive effort and look forward to seeing the teams we competed against at the state finals in June,” Ellery added.
