FB: South Wins Battle Of Terre Haute

Staff Report

South controlled the line of scrimmage and won the battle of
Terre Haute
Friday night. The Braves downed city rival North 25-13 in the MIC opener for
both squads. The victory evened Terre Haute South’s record at 1-1, while North
fell to 0-2 on the young campaign.

A strong ground attack was the absolute key to this game. South
rumbled for over 400 yards on the ground, including 160 from quarterback Bryn
Schwartz. Running back Stevon Croom added 150 yards.

Most of the damage was done in the first half when Schwartz
rambled for 122 of his yards. It all led to a 12-6 Braves lead at intermission.
South would extend the lead to 19-6 midway through the third quarter and then
things got interesting. North cut the lead to 19-13 when sophomore quarterback
Chris Holler sprinted six yards around the left side for a touchdown. North
then recovered an onside kick and the game was suddenly in the balance.

North drove inside the South 25, but failed to convert on a
fourth and four. It was the last serious threat they would mount. South added a
score at the 9:00 mark of the fourth period and hung on for the victory.

GG: Terre Haute South easily captures own invitational

Terre Haute South dominated its own invitational Aug. 12 at Rea Park in Terre Haute. The Braves set several team and personal standards while cruising to a 22-stroke victory over second-place Jasper. Among those breakthroughs, South shot a team total of 330, the best team score for the Braves in five years.

Individually, Sloane Engle took medalist honors with a 79. That was a personal 18-hole best for the junior. Alana Whitlock also set a personal best, firing an 83. Two other Braves players were in the 80s for the day as both Kelsey Fuqua and Katelyn Goshell carded 84s.

Jasper was led by an 80 from Katie Schnarr. Terre Haute North, meanwhile, finished fourth in the 10-team field. The Patriots got a big boost from freshman Rachel Welker, who shot a team-low 86.

Here are team scores from the Terre Haute South Invitational:

Terre Haute South 330
Jasper 352
Northview 378
Terre Haute North 382
Terre Haute South (B) 397
Greencastle 437
West Vigo 453

FB: MIC school preview – Terre Haute South

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The master scheduler did Terre Haute South’s football team darn near zero favors this fall. The Braves played the state’s eighth-toughest schedule in 2007 according to the Sagarin power ratings, and it certainly doesn’t look any easier this season.

The Braves face five road games, including four of their first five. Terre Haute South will open at perennial Conference Indiana power Bloomington South in Week 1 before heading to Vincennes Lincoln, defending Class 5A state champion Carmel, and 5A monster Center Grove in Weeks 3-5.

After that season-opening donnybrook, the Braves get to host perhaps-returning-to-glory Ben Davis and serious Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference sleeper North Central (Indianapolis) before heading to 5A juggernaut Warren Central and finishing at home against Lawrence North.

At least South gets to host rival Terre Haute North this year (Week 2, Aug. 29). Eesh.

Despite that daunting slate o’ games, second-year coach Mark Raetz remains upbeat after his initial season as a head coach ended with a 2-8 finish.

”It’s going to be another fun and exciting season of football in the MIC,” Raetz said.

Everyone knows the “poor, normal-sized Terre Haute schools having to play in the gigantic MIC” tale of woe. And it’s true that the best finish that THS has managed over the past seven seasons is a tie for sixth with Terre Haute North at 2-5 in 2002.

But Raetz is not letting that mentality dictate what he wants to do in Season 2.

“We need to get outstanding leadership from our senior class, stay injury-free for the entire season, and compete hard and have confidence each week we play,” Raetz said. “And of course we need some luck.”

Gone are six All-Wabash Valley performers. Back are 14 starters, including seven on each side of the ball. So there is a nucleus from which to build for the Braves, whose last real taste of success came 20 years ago with sectional and regional championships in 1988.

Offensively, junior quarterback Bryn Schwartz (6’0”, 170 pounds) will take over for Koby Kraemer (now playing at Indiana State), while a contingent of a half-dozen running backs will vie to replace Brock Lough (also at Indiana State) in the backfield. Raetz is counting on a big season from 5’9”, 160-pound senior wide receiver Elias Brown.

On the defensive side, the Braves will look to leadership from 6’2”, 225-pound senior linebacker Michael Mardis and his LB mate, junior Billy Byerley (5’9”, 180). Brown will go both ways in manning one spot in the defensive backfield, and he’ll be joined back there by senior Michael Nasser (5’8,” 150).

Brown and Nasser will handle the kick return duties, hoping to provide a spark for a South team that will be looking for a better postseason result than a year ago, when a loaded Columbus North team posted a 47-0 shutout in the sectional opener.

The Braves once again will compete in the eight-team 5A Sectional 7 with Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Center Grove, Columbus North, Decatur Central, Martinsville, and Terre Haute North.

GG: Metropolitan Interscholastic girls golf preview

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Teams that currently reside in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference have won six individual and five team state championships over the years. But it’s been since 2002 that a girl (Center Grove’s Katie Tewell) has captured the crown and 1985 since a school (North Central) has done so.

So what’s the outlook for this year’s MIC? A return trip to the state finals for Carmel (ninth in the team chase a year ago), with the other seven schools furiously trying to track the Greyhounds down.

Carmel (ranked 12th in the preseason coaches’ poll), with 17 state finals appearances to go with its lone team title back in 1980, has a history of success on its side as well as some of the best talent in the state. The Greyhounds do lose state runner-up golfer Milena Savich, but a deep and experienced youth movement should keep the Hamilton County power purring right along.

“The MIC is always Carmel – you’re chasin’ Carmel,” said former Warren Central coach Al Darko. “(Coach Ken) Kelly does a good job with those girls.”

After the Greyhounds, expect to see a three-way battle for next-tier status as Center Grove, North Central, and Terre Haute South look to extend their fertile golfing traditions. The conference’s other four schools – Ben Davis, Lawrence North, Terre Haute North, and Warren Central – may suffer from heavy graduations losses, lots of inexperience, or both.

Top teams
Carmel
Coach Ken Kelly returns for his 16th season leading at Carmel, the last nine as head coach. The Greyhounds had the luxury of 24 girls at tryouts, and 10 girls will earn valuable experience playing on the junior varsity.

In other words, look out for Carmel next year. The 2008 ’Hounds will pick each lineup from five juniors, a sophomore, and a freshman.

Three of those juniors – Ari Savich, Kate McDougal, and Diana Poulin – gained valuable course time a year ago as the Greyhounds advanced all the way to the state finals, where they placed ninth. State runner-up Milena Savich will be missed, but Carmel appears to be reloading, not rebuilding.

“We’re counting on Ari to lead the team this season, with help from returning players Diana and Kate from last year’s varsity squad,” said Kelly, noting that junior Hilary Givens, junior Rebecca Price, and sophomore Elise Kelner all played at the top of the JV program a year ago. “We are excited about the challenges ahead, and the team is looking forward to seeing where they stack up in the invitationals next week.”

Carmel opens its season Aug. 4 at the Brebeuf Invitational, then will compete in the Hamilton Southeastern Invitational Tuesday, the Artie Invitational at Martinsville Thursday, and the East Noble Invitational Saturday before going to The Legends for the Center Grove Invitational Aug. 11. Once school gets under way it’ll be several dual matches before the Hall of Fame Classic in Richmond over Labor Day weekend.

“We’ll see several (MIC) teams this next week, so we’ll have a better feel for where we are,” Kelly said. “I’ve only seen them for two days, but they’re real excited about everybody’s play.

A ninth-grader will be the Greyhounds’ wild card.

“Brianna Midkiff is a nice surprise,” Kelly said. “It’s great to have a soon-to-be-freshman come into the program with summer tournament experience and crack the varsity lineup. I was able to watch her in the Indiana Golf Foundation event this summer and expected she would challenge for a spot on the roster.”

Team goals are to have a winning season, repeat as MIC champions (Carmel has won the conference tourney nine of the last 10 years), and make it back to the state tournament, Kelly said.

Center Grove
Coach Doug Keller replaces Jim Williams as the Trojans will attempt to once again advance to regional play (they barely missed out on a state finals berth by finishing fourth at the Martinsville Regional a year ago). Center Grove has a rich tradition on the links, having appeared in the state finals seven times, the most recent coming in 2005.

Likely to struggle
Ben Davis
Stan Benge, the Giants’ renowned girls basketball coach, takes over the reins from former coach Dave Patz this season as the latter spends time watching his daughter, Breanna, go for an individual state title at Avon. The Giants lost their Nos. 1, 3, and 4 players so will be relying on youth – led by sophomore Krissy Fitzgerald – to carry the load.

“Besides Krissy, we are very young and inexperienced,” Benge said. “Krissy will be a pretty good player for us, and the other four will keep getting better – they played in a few summer tournaments, and if we can get back to regionals that would be wonderful.”

Coach Abe Nasser returns for his second season leading the Patriots’, who placed seventh at the MIC Tournament last year with a 401. The departed Whitney Crowley made the All-Conference team by finishing second individually with a score of 78, and No. 2 Danielle Rosselli has also graduated.

The Patriots thus will have some big spikes to fill. Nasser will be counting on leadership from senior Abby Colwell and freshman Rachel Welker.

“Colwell is a senior with excellent leadership abilities – she will be the captain of the team in her final season,” Nasser said. “Our No. 1 player will be incoming freshman Rachel Welker. She has been playing in several Pepsi Junior Golf events this summer and doing well – I expect her to be very successful over the next four years.”

Nasser also has high hopes for freshman Jesi Kaperak, the niece of multiple Terre Haute City champ winner Ted Kaperak.

“They have been working hard to get her ready for high school golf,” Nasser said.

Warren Central
Coach Dave Burton, the Warriors’ girls basketball coach a year ago and an 11-year assistant under former coach Al Darko, takes over for the latter as Warren Central attempts to once again reach the regional. Darko was the girls head coach the past 13 years and the boys coach the last 11, so the transition figures to be seamless.

“One thing that I really want to do is continue developing on the foundation that coach Darko has laid with the girls program,” Burton said. “A school our size should always be in contention to advance to the regional.”

Seniors Melanie Chestnut (best 2007 round was an 84, 9-hole average was 45.3, individual sectional finish was 14th) and Mary Beth Spindler (90-46.8-n/a) and junior Maggie Smith (99-46.2-29th) return to lead Warren in ’08. That trio will be joined by senior Allison Sweeney (49.6) and juniors Sara Hancock (49.4), Leslie MacDonald (49.5), and Kasey Ferbrache (50.4).

“We will be counting on the returning letterwinners – they have the experience and ability to help us sneak up on some people with a little help from the newcomers,” Burton said. “Melanie Chestnut played really well in some big tournaments, and I think she could have a really good year.”

Warren will need her to continue those prime-time performances as the Warriors lost their top three players (Amanda Archer, Marie Black, and Melinda Black). That threesome, according to Darko, was part of the best four-year girls golf run in school history. So the early weeks of the impending season will be critical to the young Warriors’ development.

“We are playing at Roncalli Aug. 6 and then will play the Ben Davis Invitational Aug. 16 and the Franklin Central Invitational Aug. 23 – these should give us some experience before moving on to the Marion County Tournament and then the MIC,” Burton said. “This tournament experience can do nothing but prepare us for the sectional.

“We don’t have an experienced team, but I like the makeup of the girls that we have and hope that we can improve throughout the year and be competitive come tournament time. If we improve consistently throughout the year, we should have ourselves in a position to advance to the regional.”
