South controlled the line of scrimmage and won the battle of
Friday night. The Braves downed city rival North 25-13 in the MIC opener for
both squads. The victory evened Terre Haute South’s record at 1-1, while North
fell to 0-2 on the young campaign.
A strong ground attack was the absolute key to this game. South
rumbled for over 400 yards on the ground, including 160 from quarterback Bryn
Schwartz. Running back Stevon Croom added 150 yards.
Most of the damage was done in the first half when Schwartz
rambled for 122 of his yards. It all led to a 12-6 Braves lead at intermission.
South would extend the lead to 19-6 midway through the third quarter and then
things got interesting. North cut the lead to 19-13 when sophomore quarterback
Chris Holler sprinted six yards around the left side for a touchdown. North
then recovered an onside kick and the game was suddenly in the balance.
North drove inside the South 25, but failed to convert on a
fourth and four. It was the last serious threat they would mount. South added a
score at the 9:00 mark of the fourth period and hung on for the victory.
