Undefeated
Avon has the top spot this week in the statewide softball poll. However, two
MIC teams are right behind. Center Grove (15-1) and Carmel (13-1) sit in the
second and third spots. Terre Haute South is the other MIC team on the list.
The Braves come in at #15. Here is a look at the complete poll in all classes.
The streak
is starting to get very impressive. Terre Haute South won its tenth straight
game Wednesday by downing West Vigo 4-0. It is the third longest winning streak
in school history.
Gina Furrey was the hero of this contest. She
pitched the shutout at the Vikings. It was a performance that was sorely
needed. The game was scoreless through the first five innings before the Braves
finally broke it open in the sixth
The MIC has
placed two players on the Indiana All-Star team. Jake Odum, the feisty point
guard of Terre haute South took one berth. Odum is headed down the street to
play for Indiana State next season.
The other
MIC representative is Stephan Van Treese of Lawrence North. Van Treese was the
latest big man to be the center of the attack for Coach Jack Keefer’s Wildcats.
He is headed down I-65 to play for Rick Pitino at Louisville.
Last week we
predicted it would not be long before North Central joined its MIC brethren
that are dominating the statewide poll of elite teams in Indiana. We were
right. After just one week, the Panthers now appear at #30 in the poll, making
six MIC teams now on the list. Carmel remains third followed immediately by
Center Grove. Terre Haute South is eighth and city rival North is 12th
this week. Warren Central remains 28th despite a shutout loss to #14
Greenwood.
Junior Nick
Heinz of Vincennes Lincoln held Terre Haute South to five hits and just two
runs as the Alices defeated the Braves Wednesday, 3-2. Vincennes used a quick
start to take a 3-1 lead after two innings and relied on Heinz to do the rest.
Bryn Schwartz took the loss for Terre Haute South.
The loss
left Terre Haute South at 1-3 on the young season while Vincennes remains
undefeated at 3-0
Log this
under the heading of what’s new. The MIC dominates the first statewide tennis
poll of the spring. Five conference teams appear in the list of the top 30
squads in Indiana. They are headlined by Carmel in third and Center Grove in
fourth. Also appearing are both Terre Haute schools. South is ranked eighth and
North is 12th. Warren Central comes in at #29. Missing from the list
is North Central and you can bet that will not last very long. Here is a look
at the complete poll.
