Two-time defending state champion Ben Davis was not a very gracious host April 30 as the second-ranked Giants rolled to the team title in the annual Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Championships.
The highest-ranked school among six teams rated in the state’s Top 11 in the latest coaches’ poll, Ben Davis won six of 16 events in totaling 140 points to easily outdistance No. 4 North Central (Indianapolis) (108). Eighth-ranked Warren Central (107) finished just a smidge back in third, followed by No. 6 Carmel (82), No. 11 Lawrence North (79.5), and fifth-ranked Center Grove (73).
Ben Davis got the meet started off in style by winning the 4×800 meter relay as Brian Allen, Luke Brahm, Dominique Brooks, and Traishaun Johnson combined for an 8:01.19. Jerry Wilson then won the next event, the 100-meter dash, in :10.71.
The Giants pieced together back-to-back victories midway through the meet as the 4×100 relay unit of Ray Bush, Justin Garrett, Robert Rose, and Dequan Ruth went :42.04 before Rose won the 400 in :50.33. Ben Davis captured its last two Ws in the high jump (Alex Rowe with a 6-04.00) and the pole vault (Wesley Schenck with a 14-03.00).
Runner-up North Central won two events – the 200 (John Broaden in :22.28) and the shot put (Anthony Bradley in 57-06.00). The Panthers also suffered a significant upset as Terre Haute North’s John Mascari (9:10.02) beat defending state champion Futsum Zeinasellassie (9:11.53) in the 3200, with both runners topping Zeinasellassie’s year-old MIC record of 9:13.43.
Warren Central garnered a single victory as Arq’Eil Shaw took the 300 hurdles in 39.22.
Carmel coach Will Ellery liked his Greyhounds’ fourth-place finish that was paced by victories from Chris Walden (4:24.83 in the 1600) and Langston Newton (152-00.00 in the discus).
“We had a lot of guys step up and earn every point to finish fourth in a meet that featured five of the top eight teams in the state,” said Ellery, whose team will host the Hamilton County Championships May 7. “We mentioned to the guys that this was in many ways a state preview meet, and that every point counts.
“We are very pleased with the team performance.”
