BSW: Carmel shows depth in winning state championship

Staff Report

Anyone who
questions whether swimming is a team sport need look no further than this year’s
state finals. #2 Carmel upset #1 Munster for the title at the IU Natatorium on
Saturday. The Greyhounds did so by exhibiting superior depth.

Carmel won
only two events in the meet. Matt Gerth took the 200 Freestyle and the
Greyhounds captured the 400 Freestyle Relay. Nonetheless, most observers
predicted Carmel had the meet in its back pocket before the finals even took
place. They came through preliminaries with a tidal wave of swimmers in
position to score points and they did not disappoint in the finals.

Carmel took
the title with 245 points. Munster was second with 217 followed by Chesterton.
Three other MIC teams fared well in the standings. North Central finished
seventh with 90 points. Terre Haute South cracked the top 20, ending 18th
with 41 points. Lawrence North was 24th overall with 31 points on
the board.

Here is a
look at the complete team standings. Individual results are on the Hoosier
Authority home page.
